| Janet Bradley was my best friend in the entire world. We met one day in Kansas in 1976 in the early evening. It was a hot and humid time of day. We both found the shade of a sprawling tree in an effort to escape the heat for a few minutes. We sipped from a nice bottle of red wine, relaxing after an exhausting day of sailing competition; racing our Tornado Catamarans in foul weather. We talked for a while and became instant friends. After all, there are not many women that race big cats! Our friendship grew in love and respect until Janet moved from Chicago to Atlanta after a painful divorce, so we could live closer to each other. It was a wonderful, supportive friendship! Janet battled breast cancer for 15 years. From the day of diagnosis in 1987, when her oncologist gave her a life expectancy of only 6 months, her eating habits became a major concern and motivator, imperative to her survival. Janet educated herself and learned that what she put into her body could and did give her a better quality of life with cancer. She also knew that she could prolong her life for many years, IF she could learn about eating the right kinds of food and IF she stayed positive about her health. Janet lived a full and active life for 15 years after her initial diagnosis as a result of improving what she put into her body; long after the doctors thought her life would end. Janet lost her battle with cancer in Florida on September 25, 2003. I miss her terribly, every day. I am so grateful to have had her in my life those 15 extra years. I am now changed for the better in many ways by her sheer presence and influence in my life. In Janet’s memory and to thank her for all she taught me, and many, many others about health, nutrition, herbs, organic produce, trans and non-trans fats and eating for wellness, The Janet K. Bradley was founded in 2005 to honor her knowledge, intelligence, friendship and the gift to others of herself. During our growing season, the Janet K. Bradley Foundation provides and delivers, free of charge to local qualified clients, Naturally Grown and Organic Produce to those undergoing chemotherapy; or other forms of cancer treatment, housebound or shut in medical patients, the elderly or unemployed in need that simply cannot afford to purchase healthy, fresh herbs and produce.
